Volunteering and supporting a charity is not just for a good cause, it is also a great way to make new friends. Luckily, there are plenty of fun volunteering opportunities in Utrecht. If you ever have some time left (ha-ha), here are some suggestions on how to spend it.
Impakt Festival – 30 October till 3 November
Impakt is a cultural festival in Utrecht, and the organization is looking for several volunteers. Do you feel like showing off the skills you gained at Bartender’s Weekend? Then this is the place for you. Or if you are in a more creative mood, go help to build up the festival. They are even looking for hospitality employees who welcome guests, artists and the press. Speaking English is a must for the job, so it is ideal for the non-Dutchies too!

Volunteer as Zwarte Piet – 17 November till 5 December
On 17 November, Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus, will arrive on his steamboat in Utrecht. Afterwards, he will stay in museum Catharijneconvent. The museum is now looking for people who would like to volunteer as Zwarte Piet, Sinterklaas’ helper, or Sinterklaas, and guide groups of children through his “crib”.
The Sinterklaas festivity is always surrounded by happiness and lots of excited children (and presents, and food), so helping out is a great way to make some kids very happy and to emerge yourself in this Dutch holiday.

Party with Spontaan
What if you do want to support charity, but don’t want to get too active and spend too much time on it? Go to one of Spontaan’s charity concerts. Your 5 euros entrance fee goes straight to a small charity chosen by this students’ association. In return, you enjoy live music and good company.
The charity concerts are hosted a couple of times a year; more information: spontaanutrecht.nl
Support 3FM Serious Request – 18 till 24 December
The famous annual “House of Glass”, in which a couple of 3FM DJs are locked up for a week without any food. You can support the event in various ways, from donating money if they play your requested song to starting your own mini-charity.

Run the PWN Egmond half marathon – 12 January
Supporting a charity while running 21K next to the beach of Egmond – sounds though, but there’s still some time to join MarathonCO and start training. You can be the philanthropist by donating money when you enroll, join a charity team or run for a charity of your choice and look for sponsors to support you.

Work for Terre des Hommes – all year
In September 2009, TdH started a store for secondhand quality products. All profits of the shop go to a project of Terre des Hommes that supports a crisis centre in Cambodia for women and children who are victims of violence, trade and sexual exploitation. They are always looking for sales assistants, so if you’d like to gain some experience in this sector, this is definitely a job for you.
